Congratulations on the bambino! I'll be buying him his first silk shirt. Hope you are well and enjoying your work. I'm still doing that for which I was prepared by your class---teaching juvenile delinquents. I do enjoy it greatly. What teacher wouldn't---the kids are locked up in my class and couldn't escape if they wanted to! Currently I'm with my sister, who probably won't see Christmas due to cancer. The struggles of life are manifold and sneaky. Blessings on you, Jared.

I should have added that, in just about every Push vs. Nudge conversation I've ever been in, I always adopt the Pushy approach.

Another example of this kind of disagreement and point of cognitive dissonance is the situation with religious people who deny evolution, or defend "intelligent design," which is the same thing as denying evolution. Here, nudging just seems wholly inappropriate as a public policy strategy - we can't wait around for people to get comfortable with science and in the meantime allow biology class to be converted into theology classes. So that's another question: if nudging advances the practical and pushing advances the true, in which cases is the latter always necessary?

Comment on Languages as degree requirements by Adam Kotsko

The broader goal of a PhD program is to convert the student into an independent researcher -- obviously being able to read texts in major scholarly languages without having to rely on a translation (which is often hugely delayed and in some cases never materializes) is a major part of that independence. Even in analytic philosophy, I get the impression that there is creative work being done in Europe.

Getting it under your belt early on in your career means that once the "independent translation" is necessary, you won't have to put your life on hold to actually learn the language from scratch.
